Some Celebrites Love Animals. Others are Beasts

Madonna wearing a real chinchilla coatMadonna, Madonna, as if you havn’t pissed off enough people by now, you had to go and start a fight with PETA. What for? You had some of my support during the crucifixion controversy during your latest show, act, but when it comes to animals, I’m sorry; I don’t see the point of wearing a real rabbit or a fox when there are so many substitutes out there, including artificial fur. And I must say I’m not alone on this one – Many celebrities have shown their support for animals along the years.

In case you’ve been wondering what PETA is – this is the the largest animal rights organization in the world. PETA goes for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and was founded in 1980. It is well known for its large celebrities’ support coming from many vegetarian ones. One of the most famous supporters is Sir Paul Mc’Cartney, who, in his first interview after Linda’s death, promised to continue working for animal rights. Only in 1998 he stepped back from his stance about testing drugs on animals, after he found out that the drugs Linda McCartney was taking before her death had been tested on animals. I wonder whether his kindness for animals goes well with his ex-wife’s abuse accusations, but Mc’Cartney also participated in The PETA Concert for Party Animals, which was a gathering of stars that have made animal rights one of today’s most popular causes, hosted by Jamie Lee Curtis & Alec Baldwin. Other participants were Chrissie Hynde, The B-52’s & Sarah McLachlan.

Mc’Cartney’s daughter, designer Stella Mc’Cartney, is taking an active part as well. She has turned down a chance to become lead designer for the Gucci Group in 2000 because of the fashion house’s work with leather and fur, and recorded a video for PETA in 1998 showing footage from its four-month undercover investigation into fur farming.

Pamela Anderson naked for PETAPamela Anderson, the woman and the body, has became vegetarian in her early teens when she walked in on her dad slaughtering an animal he had just hunted – not a nice sight for anyone. She also took part in some of PETA’s campaigns, including the 2003’s “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” advertising campaign. On June 2006, during one of PETA’s gala events, Anderson went inside the Stella McCartney’s boutique and said she would take her clothes off if the event raised enough money. Needless to say, enough money was raised… Who said nudity is shameful?? And as shown from the attached picture, models supporting PETA is always a blessed thing if it gets Christy Turlington to get naked as well.

Looks like hot-big-breasted blonds and being a veggie goes together – Dolly Parton is a well known supporter as well as Anna Nicole Smith. She has been featured in advertisements for PETA - spoofing Marilyn Monroe’s “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” segment in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, a 2004 ad states “Fur-free blondes are best.” In another ad the following year, Smith posed with her dogs in a campaign against Lams dog-food for their alleged cruelty to animals.

Simon Cowell and his dog for PETASpeaking of cruelty – he may be totally insensitive towards his young contestants, but when it come to animals, Simon Cowell would do whatever he can to make sure no harm is done, including taking a part of PETA’s campaign along with his little dog. I guess there’s a human side in all of us after all… Even Steven Seagal, who would slaughter his enemies mercilessly in each on his films, would become Sister Mary-Clair once an animal goes by. On the sexier side, we have Juaquin Phoenix to appear on a pro-veggie ad made by PETA as well.

The list of supporters is long, and includes names like Pink, Sarah Jessica Parker, Bill Maher, Tommy Lee, Alicia Silverstone, David Gallagher, Christina Applegate, Morissey and Charlize Theron (which makes you wonder how come SHE never took off her cloths for such notable cause. Well, I guess there’s always something to hope for…) – all of them are of course vegetarian as well, and have been doing their best to use their fame and status in order to influence their young fans, as well as try to change policies of cosmetic companies, clothing lines and fast-food chains. I assume it would only get longer with time, and who knows, we might even find Madonna in it some day. One thing is certain – when you decide to follow your idols, make sure you choose the right thing…
